My father, Frank H. Detwiler, was befriended with Robert Smith when my father was about 15 years old about 1910. Robert came to my grandfathers farm and stayed for about a week for 2 or 3 years. My grandfather had a 100 acre farm near Rapp’s Dam. My father told me the story how Mrs. Smiths Pies started. She started by baking several pies and placed them on the window sill to cool. As people walked by they smelled this wonderful aroma that flowed to the sidewalk. She was then asked by some people whether she would bake some pies for them. Soon she was spending alot of time baking pies and Robert would deliver them. When she started making these pies, she lived on Church Street in Phoenixville, Pa (about 1910). At this time Robert’s father had died. This is written to tell the story according to my father who was Robert’s friend. My grandfather’s name was Henry C. Detwiler – Rapp’s Dam – about 2 miles from Phoenixville.
