The History of Gillette
King Camp Gillette was an inventor. But, before all that, Gillette’s family home was destroyed in the Chicago Fire of 1871, so he went to work as a traveling salesman to support himself. Later, he worked for the inventor of the disposable Crown Cork bottle cap. Gillette tried to come up with a new invention himself. Then, one morning in 1895, while shaving, he thought of a razor with a blade that was disposable and inexpensive. It wasn’t until 1901 that he could find someone who didn’t think it was impossible to manufacture. The Gillette Safety Razor Company began in South Boston. By 1904 90,000 razors and 123,000 blades had been sold. During World War I, every soldier or officer received Gillette’s safety razor and blades as part of their supply kit, thanks to a deal Gillette struck with the U.S. Army Forces.
In 1934, the Aristocrat was Gillette’s newest blade, a TTO, or Twist to Open. The razor head was disengaged from the handle. The Super Speed model appeared in 1947, and in 1985 the first adjustable razor, which allowed for a closer shave made its debut. 1966 brought a redesigned Super Speed with its production lasting until 1976. All of these blades are considered the older Gillette products. 1971 and after is considered the newer Gillette products.
The 70’s brought us the Trac II and Trac II Plus, the first two bladed razor. Then came the pivoting head, which was known as the Atra, designed to make the shaving of necks easier. The Gillette Sensor came to being in the 90’s along with the Sensor for Women. These products gave us the first spring-loaded blades. Sensor Excel, Sensor 3, which had three blades, were brought about in 1995.
The Mach 3 came to us in 1998. Now there was a third blade set at an angle to give a closer shave than ever, allowing fewer strokes and thus, less skin irritation. Gillette paid 35 million dollars to market the Mach 3. Mach 3 turbo and Venus, a ladies’ version of the Mach 3 followed. The Mach 3 family, which consists of The Mach 3, the Mach 3 Turbo, the M3 Power Razor, and the Mach 3 Sensitive Disposable Razor, are all popular brands of Gillette today. And, as with any popular product, there is always a way to save money on the products.
